Save Fred Lab
Purpose: There were a few purposes of the "Save Fred" lab. The literal purpose of the lab was to save a little worm named Fred, but in all actuality, it was to get to know how labs work and how to use teamwork to solve projects.
Procedure: During this lab, in order to save Fred, my partner and I had to get the life saver from underneath the boat, onto Fred who is on top of the boat. We could only touch anything in this lab with our "Fred Touchers" (paper clips) and if Fred fell onto the desk or piece of paper the cup was on, we had to start over again.
Pre Lab Questions:
Why is it important in science to follow an agreed upon procedure?
- It is important to follow an agreed upon procedure because than you have a plan that has been thought out well, before the excitement of the lab. This will insure every step you take gets you closer to the results you want to get
Why is it important to document your procedure and any errors or differences?
- It is important to document your procedures, errors, and differences, because when doing a lab, every detail counts. And error you make can effect the outcome of the lab, and you want those changes to be documented.
Why do we not usually have food in chemistry class?
- We usually do not have food in chemistry class because the tables are already very dirty from all the chemicals used that have touched the tables. If you were to eat something from the tables, they would not be very clean, or healthy.
Observations:
Fred: 7.6 grams and 8.4cm in length
Life Preserver: 7400 milligrams and 35mm in diameter
Boat: 266ml and 26cm in circumference
Conclusion: In order to save Fred, it was easiest when you used teamwork with your lab partner and worked together.
Post-Lab Questions:
Was one of you more a leader, and the other followed, or did you share the responsibility for ideas equally? Why did it work out that way?
- During this lab, I feel as if we both shared the responsibility equally. I feel like it turned out this way because during this lab, it required to sets of hands. Both my partner and I did our job effectively, and didn't have to argue much.
What areas of expertise can you bring to a project?(What are you good at?)
-Some areas of expertise I can bring to a project is working well with numbers, an engaged mind, and a fluent researcher.
What do you feel like you may struggle with in chemistry
- Something I feel like I may struggle with in chemistry is controlling myself from taking over the group. I like to be in control of what I do, and sometimes that accidentally results as me coming off as bossy, or a control freak. I need to step back and make sure my partner gets a word in too.
